Mine-to-Magnet: The Critical Path

The 4 Steps to an EV Motor

Breaking dependence on foreign supply requires building capacity at four distinct stages:

  1. Upstream (Mining & Concentration): Digging the rock and removing waste. (Exists in USA/Australia)
  2. Midstream (Separation): Separating the oxides. (Dominated by China)
  3. Metal Making: Turning oxide powder into metal alloy. (Dominated by China)
  4. Magnet Making: Sintering the alloy into blocks and machining them. (Dominated by China/Japan)

Most Western initiatives fail because they only solve Step 1. Without Steps 2, 3, and 4, the mined rock must still be shipped to China.
