All the prevalent Google Pixel Buds will get Gemini LLM and the accompanying AI assistant. An upcoming update would make it easier to summon and use Google’s Generative Artificial Intelligence (Gen AI) on the older generation of TWS earbuds.
Google will send Gemini AI update to older Pixel Buds
The Pixel Buds, Pixel Buds A-series, or Pixel Buds Pro earbuds have Google Assistant. Moreover, users can summon the virtual assistant when using voice controls or on-device earbud touch controls.
Moving forward, these older generations of earbuds will gain access to Gemini LLM and the Gen AI platform. Interestingly, Google is maintaining the functionality of both Google Assistant and Gemini AI on the previous generation Pixel Buds.
In a mass email sent to Pixel Buds owners, Google indicated how Gemini and Google Assistant will co-exist. The “Hey Google” activation phrase will stay, but it will no longer be a separate setting. Users will be able to control the default Google Assistant on their Android phone or tablet, stated Google:
“The Hey Google & Voice Match setting on your connected Android phone or tablet will now control whether you can use “Hey Google” on your Assistant-enabled headphones. To use “Hey Google” and receive hands-free help on your headphones with your voice, turn on “Hey Google” from Assistant settings on your connected Android phone or tablet.”
Not all older Pixel Buds will get Gemini Gen AI
By updating the previous generation of Pixel Buds, Google is reportedly bringing some feature parity with the recently launched Pixel Buds Pro 2. However, the latest TWS earbuds from Google have Gemini Live integration, which puts them way ahead of their predecessors.
Incidentally, several hundred Pixel Buds could remain limited to Google Assistant. Google has indicated the new update for the older generation of Pixel Buds is limited to countries where Gemini is currently available. This means several of these TWS earbuds have access to Google Assistant only.
Google hasn’t indicated any timeframe for the release of an update that will bring Gemini AI to older Pixel Buds. It seems the company may not have decided if it will send out a small OTA patch or a larger firmware update.
