Ever since Apple introduced Apple Intelligence, we found out that the company was pretty cozy with OpenAI. It wasn’t until recently that we found out how close their partnership was with rumors of the iPhone maker investing in the AI tech start-up. Well, it looks like Apple is no longer investing in OpenAI.
In case you don’t know, Apple Intelligence will integrate OpenAI’s models. It will reach out to the models when the phone’s internal models can’t complete a task. Whenever it needs to contact the GPT models, the phone will ask for your permission. This is something that will make it one of the most secure forms of AI on the market.
Apple is not investing in OpenAI
Apple’s friendship with OpenAI seemed to go past the Apple Intelligence integration, as word on the grapevine is that Apple was thinking about investing in the company. OpenAI is in the process of looking for some investors, and it could raise around $7 billion by the end of the year.
Some of the companies that could invest in the company are Microsoft and Nvidia. If Microsoft invests the expected $1 billion, then it would have contributed at least $14 billion to the company. We heard that Apple was also going to put some money forth; however, according to the report, Apple has backed out of investing.
At this point, we don’t know how much the company was going to invest or why it’s backing out. However, one reason could be the skepticism from regulators. Recently, regulators were looking at the investments that OpenAI was getting on behalf of major corporations. Undoubtedly, if you’re getting investments from two of the biggest companies in the world, it could be considered an unfair advantage.
Regulators were also looking into the investments that Anthropic got from Google and Amazon, two other massive companies. So, the pressure from regulators might have been the reason for Apple pulling its investments.
