In its latest Made by Google event, the company launched the Google TV Streamer as the next-gen “Chromecast” product. But not only that, as the Mountain View giant also confirmed the discontinuation of the Chromecast brand. However, that doesn’t mean that your dongle will be left without software support since the Chromecast with Google TV devices will receive Android TV 14.
Android TV 14 coming to Chromecast with Google TV dongles this year
The Google TV Streamer marked a radical shift in the product line. The company got rid of the dongle format to bet on a set-top box. Now it is a better product with more ports, storage, and even a Thread radio for future proofing. The company will no longer produce the classic Chromecast dongles, although the Google TV Streamer costs almost twice as much as the 4K model and more than three times as much as the HD model.
The price of the Google TV Streamer is adequate for what it offers. Still, it would be nice to see a new, more affordable Google TV dongle in the future. Anyway, at first it was thought that the company would only push security updates to the Chromecast with Google TV lineup. After all, the devices have been stuck on Android TV 12 for a while now. However, surprisingly, Google has confirmed that Android TV 14 will be coming to Chromecast dongles.
The tech specs of the current Chromecast devices are pretty humble. This reinforced the theory that they wouldn’t be getting another big Android TV update. Thankfully that won’t be the case, so now might be the ideal time to buy one. Current units will continue to be sold while supplies last.
It’s not yet known exactly when Android TV 14 will be coming to Chromecast devices. A Google representative only told Android Authority that the rollout will happen “later this year.” So, at least you won’t have to wait until 2025 if everything goes as planned. Let’s hope to get more details about it soon.
