Google is rolling out a new firmware update to the Chromecast with Google TV 4K, the first update of 2024. It brings the December 2023 security patch to the device. There are no new features in tow. The Chromecast Remote has yet to pick up an update this year.
There’s a new update for the Chromecast with Google TV 4K
The latest update for the Chromecast with Google TV 4K comes with the firmware build number STTL.231114.004. The previous build number was STTE.230915.005.S1 (rolled out in December 2023). According to 9to5Google, which first reported this update, the new OTA (over the air) package has a download size of 148MB. While new updates are installed automatically, you can run manual checks too.
To check for new updates, go to the home screen of your Chromecast with Google TV and Enter Settings. Now, navigate to System > About > System update and see if there is a new firmware release available for you. Along with the December security patch, the latest update also brings “bug fixes and performance improvements” to the device. However, there are no feature additions to talk about.
Even though Android 14 has been around for several months now, the Chromecast with Google TV 4K remains on Android 12. Google also has yet to enable Fast Pair for the device. The company recently said that the Chromecast with Google TV will get Fast pair support “in the next month,” so another update might be on the way soon. The announcement came at CES 2024, where Google made several other Chromecast and TV-related announcements.
Once Fast Pair is enabled, you will get a “Connect now” prompt on the screen for seamless pairing with Bluetooth headphones. Google first demonstrated the feature at CES 2022. Chromebooks received Fast Pair support early last year and the Chromecast with Google TV appears all set to follow suit soon. The company plans to bring the feature to “more Google TV devices later this year.”
The Chromecast Remote might get a new update soon
As said earlier, there is no update for the Chromecast Remote to go with this release. The Chromecast Remote picked up an update in early December with the October 2023 security patch. It might get a new one soon. Google pushed six updates to the Chromecast with Google TV 4K last year. The first one came around the same time, with new releases following in April, May, July, October, and December.
