Last year, Google introduced a powerful tool that leverages AI to help you with your studies. Named NotebookLM, this platform allows you to upload study material, organize it, and ask Gemini questions about it. On Thursday, Google introduced some new features to NotebookLM that make it much better to use.
This announcement comes just weeks after Google added Audio Overviews to the platform. The company showcased Audio Overviews during Google I/O this year. This tool will use AI to analyze your uploaded material and create a human-sounding discussion based on the material you use. The discussions are meant to sound like a podcast-style discussion between two people. The voices sound extremely realistic, and people are unlikely to tell that they’re AI-generated.
This tool is now available to try out for free. You’ll need to sign up for NotebookLM on the Google AI Labs page. We’re not sure if this feature is going to be free, but we expect Google to charge for it at some point down the road.
Google adds more features to NotebookLM
While NotebookLM is a convenient and feature-rich platform, it could always stand to get better. Google introduced some changes that make it that much better. Starting off with the Audio Overviews, you can now generate a link to share your Audio Overview. This is an easier way to share what you’re learning.
Aside from that, Google has added some new ways of uploading content to your notebook. You can now use YouTube URLs to NotebookLM. So, if there’s an educational video that you want to reference in your studies, you can simply add the link. Google will be able to extract the information from the video and add it to your notebook. We’re pretty sure that Gemini will access the video’s subtitles or analyze the audio.
Speaking of audio, you can now upload audio files to the platform. You’re able to upload .MP3 files and .WAV files. That’s not all, as you’re able to upload Google Docs, PDFs, TXT, Google Slides, and web pages.
So, there are now more ways of adding knowledge to your notebook. Google actually gave a few examples of how you can use these features. You can analyze a video essay, upload audio from your group discussions, and upload your handwritten notes.
Want to try NotebookLM?
If this has tempted you to give NotebookLM a try, then you’re not far from trying it out. Just click on the button below to go to the page. There are a few things that you should know before you try it out. Since this heavily uses generative AI, there’s a chance that you’ll see some inaccurate information.
Also, if you’re going to use this platform, you’ll want to read Google’s terms of service to see what’s happening with your data. AI is a very data-heavy technology, so you’ll want to know what happens to your data when you’re using NotebookLM.
