Google is beginning to roll out new features that allow Android users to seamlessly switch between devices. This fulfills a promise made in May to enhance the cross-device experience. Call casting and Instant hotspots, initially unveiled as part of Google’s Better Together initiative, are now becoming widely available to Android users.

Seamless connectivity experience

Announced via Google Support, Android cross-device services enable users to effortlessly connect their Android tablet or Chromebook to their phone’s hotspot with a single tap. This eliminates the need for manual password entry. How does this work? The tech giant points out that when you enable cross-device services for two or more Android devices with the same Google Account, your devices can detect each other when they’re nearby.

Call Casting offers another convenience that allows users to transition between connected Android devices during a Google Meet call with a simple tap of the Cast icon. Furthermore, users can gain immediate access to new features as they start rolling out. However, the search giant notes that this feature is currently limited to specific apps.

For seamless integration with Android Cross-Device Services, users would need a Google account signed in on all devices, and Bluetooth connectivity enabled.

Here’s how to activate Android cross-device services

Although still in its initial rollout phase, you can activate the feature within Android device settings under Settings > Google > Devices & Sharing > Cross-Device. The setup involves creating a device group by enabling Call casting and Internet sharing (Instant hotspot) on desired devices. Users can toggle both features individually, and manage device groups on the main Cross-device services page. The service is currently part of the beta version of Google Play services (24.28.34).

It is important to mention that compatibility may vary. That’s because the service might not be universally available on all devices yet., Samsung device owners will have to rely on the existing auto-hotspot feature as the new service is incompatible with Samsung devices. Additionally, Android Go devices are ineligible for Cross-device services. That requires two or more Android phones or tablets running Android 11 or later.

While Cross-Device Services are in the initial stages, Google’s initiative demonstrates a significant leap towards a more interconnected Android ecosystem. Amidst its evolving availability and enhancement, this feature has the potential to enhance how users engage with their array of Android devices.
