Wait a minute… Why do people pay for Twitter Blue again? Right, there was that boost in the algorithm that Elon Musk promised users. Well, it doesn’t look like it’s working all that well. Based on a new report, about half of the Twitter Blue subscribers have less than 1,000 followers.
This was discovered in a report from researcher Travis Brown. He kept track of Twitter Blue subscribers since January this year, and he concluded that about half of them failed to even crack the 1,000 follower mark. This figure is about 220,123 subscribers.
These Twitter Blue subscribers might feel a little scammed
Twitter Blue offers several perks like 4,000-character-long tweets, the coveted checkmark, and others. The perks will soon include the For You feed. However, these aren’t really enough to convince people to part with $8/month.
The real lure is the lift in the algorithm that Musk promises. This means that if you are subscribed, then your tweets will be easier to spot. If you have a brand, and you constantly tweet to very little engagement, then it’d make sense for you to join.
Despite the backlash that Elon Musk got over the announcement, people still joined Blue hoping to see more interactions on their tweets. This makes the whole situation more sour, as it seems that people aren’t pulling in more followers.
We don’t know if Twitter is actually boosting their tweets, but there’s one good thing. The majority of people with under 1,000 followers have at least more than 100. About 17.6% (78,059) of all Twitter Blue subscribers have less than 100 followers. This means that about north of 30% of subscribers should, ostensibly, have more than 100.
Digging deeper, we have the sad case of the around 2,270 Twitter Blue users who have zero followers. We can’t rule out a good chunk of them being brand-new accounts that were created specifically for the algorithmic boost.
However, if you’re paying money every month only to receive no followers, then tweeting 4,000 characters doesn’t really matter, does it? Let’s hope that Elon will be able to address this issue before Twitter Blue starts losing people.
