Samsung is rolling out the March 2023 Android security patch for a couple more Galaxy devices in the US. The Galaxy S21 FE and Galaxy A01 are picking up the latest security update stateside. The Korean firm has already pushed the new SMR (Security Maintenance Release) to dozens of other Galaxy smartphones and tablets globally.

The March SMR for the Galaxy S21 FE is initially available for users with a carrier-locked unit. The update comes with the firmware build number G990USQU5EWC1 (via). Samsung will expand the rollout to factory-unlocked devices in the coming days.

The new security release was recently rolled out to the phone in a host of countries in Europe, Asia, and other regions. The firmware version may vary according to your market and carrier, but the content will remain largely unchanged.

Speaking of content, this update patches more than 60 vulnerability fixes in Galaxy devices. The vulnerabilities affect various system apps, services, and components. Around 20 of those are issues specific to Samsung products. The remaining issues affect the entire Android ecosystem.

These issues are patched by Google or the vendor of the compromised component. At least five Android OS vulnerabilities patched this month were critical ones. They could lead to remote code execution if a threat actor exploited them in the wild.

Apart from these vulnerability patches, the Galaxy S21 FE likely isn’t getting any new features or improvements here. The previous update for the phone brought One UI 5.1 with a host of goodies. The latest release is all about security enhancement.

If you’re using this phone in the US or any other market, you can go to the Software update section in the phone’s Settings app to check for updates manually. Tap on Download and install to see if an update is available. If not, wait a few days and check again.

Galaxy A01 is also getting the March update in the US

This month’s security update is also available for Samsung’s Galaxy A01 in the US. The entry-level smartphone is picking up the new release with the firmware build number A015U1UES5CWC1 for unlocked units. The carrier-locked variants should join the party soon. Note that this phone will not get feature updates anymore.

It arrived with Android 10 in late 2019 and has already received updates to Android 11 and Android 12. The handset is not eligible for Android 13. Samsung will push security updates to the Galaxy A01 until the end of this year.
