This month, Google was spotted testing a floating window to display results in Gemini. This would make it more similar to the classic Google Assistant, as well as making it easier to use with other apps. Now, Gemini’s new floating overlay panel is already rolling out to more people. Recently, the Mountain View giant also started shipping Gemini Live to Gemini Advanced subscribers.
One of the problems with Gemini is that it “kicks” you out of the current app to display the results of your search or query. While a floating overlay appears to speak or type a prompt, the output will take you to a different screen. This can be a bit annoying, even more so when Google Assistant is able to offer you results directly on the floating window.
Google is rolling out Gemini’s floating overlay panel to more people
Now, as spotted by 9to5Google, that behavior is about to change. However, as with other new feature rollouts, Gemini users will receive the floating overlay panel in stages. This approach allows Google to test the feature on a larger user base that might spot any issues or bugs that the dev team missed. Later, the company will send it to everyone. Once you get the new UI, you’ll see that Gemini’s floating window now has a glowing animation around it. The new behavior also opens up more possibilities, such as dragging/dropping text or images from Gemini’s results to messaging apps, Gmail, or others.
Plus, Gemini now has an “Ask about this video” button that will appear when invoked while watching a video on YouTube. The button will allow you to get a summary of the video or ask questions about it. Outside of YouTube, the button will be “Ask about this screen.” Lastly, unlike Gemini Live, the new floating overlay panel is coming to free users as well.
