Palworld, the game that once saw the second-highest number of concurrent Steam players ever and has resulted in a recent lawsuit from Nintendo, is now available to play on PS5 as of its official launch on September 24.
Having been available on PC and Xbox only for the past 8 months, Palworld has been somewhat of a flash in the pan it seems. When it launched back in January of 2024, it immediately gained a huge amount of success on PC alone. It quickly overtook Counter Strike 2 with its peak player count, at one point reaching a total of 1.8+ million concurrent players mere days after it was released. That number has decreased down to the tens of thousands, currently sitting at 13,667 according to Steam charts on SteamDB. That’s still plenty of players but it’s far, far away from what it used to be.
This is all to say that with the launch on PS5 this week, perhaps Palworld can gain back some of that success simply by tapping into a new player base. Time will tell. Surely, though, there are some PlayStation players who would dare to take a look.
Palworld celebrates the launch with a trailer
Palworld coming to PS5 this week was a complete surprise to probably everyone outside Pocketpair. When it popped up in the State of Play livestream, it most certainly threw PlayStation players for a loop. That’s because the game’s developers, Pocketpair, had no plans to bring the game to PS4 or PS5 earlier this year. That being said, Pocketpair’s plans seem to have changed. Then again, a PS5 launch may have always been the plan and the developer might have just wanted to keep that under wraps.
It comes at an awkward time, of course, thanks to the Nintendo lawsuit. Which claims Pocketpair has infringed on multiple Nintendo and The Pokémon Company patents. One of which seems to be related to the “throwing of Poké Balls” according to PC Gamer. Despite the lawsuit, Poketpair is going full steam ahead with Palworld’s PS5 release. And that’s probably a good thing. Because it might need the money from PS5 sales to help fight its legal battles.
You can pick up the game for $30
If you’re eager to see what Palworld is about, you can find the game now on the PlayStation Store. It’s $30, which is the same price as what the game costs on Steam. All of the same features appear to be there too. That being said, things have obviously been adjusted a bit to fit the PS format. Namely with controller UI and the like. If you haven’t seen the launch trailer, you can view it below.
