TikTok has launched “Elections Integrity Hub”. Despite facing a ban in the US, the social media platform is attempting to “protect American voters”.

What is the TikTok Elections Integrity Hub?

TikTok has announced the launch of something called the US Elections Integrity Hub. According to the official page, TikTok claims it is trying to protect the platform from misinformation.

TikTok assures it is trying to “uphold the integrity of election-related discussions”. The social media platform has tied up with the non-profit organization Democracy Works.

The TikTok Elections Integrity Hub is reportedly backed by a team of experts across democracy, civil society, security, and technology. These people, “[will try] to prevent misinformation and ensure that users have access to reliable information.”

The newly created hub will include feature updates on TikTok’s policies. There will be a “micro blog” which will highlight the platform’s actions to protect the American Presidential elections from misinformation. Moreover, TikTok will try to help users “better understand the steps being taken to protect political discourse.”

TikTok reaffirms it won’t allow politicians and political parties to advertise

In addition to creating the Elections Integrity Hub, TikTok has reaffirmed its long-standing prohibition on paid political advertising. In other words, TikTok won’t allow political parties and politicians to promote political content or fundraise on the platform. TikTok claims this policy is essential for maintaining the authenticity and inclusivity of its community.

TikTok will rely on a combination of AI technology, human moderation, and 19 fact-checking organizations to combat misinformation. Unverified or unverifiable content will carry a label. Moreover, TikTok may reduce the reach, visibility, and exposure of such content, “to prevent the spread of potential misinformation.”

Some of the most viral disinformation campaigns are trying to mislead American voters on how to vote, register, or the qualifications of candidates. Generative Artificial Intelligence (Gen AI) is being used very aggressively to run influence operations. AI-created campaigns are trying to misrepresent public figures or create false endorsements.
