Google just announced the new Pixel 9 series, and we’re all excited to get our hands on these new devices. These are the first Pixel phones with a RAM upgrade in several years, and that sounds like a good thing. However, it looks like some of that extra RAM on the Pixel 9 phones is being used by Gemini.
To recap, the company announced the new Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, Pixel 9 Pro Fold, Pixel Watch 3, and Pixel Buds Pro 2. Now’s the time to put your order in for these devices because there are a ton of pre-order deals available for these devices. Verizon and T-Mobile have some great deals along with Amazon and Best Buy. They can get you some massive savings along with free devices.
Gemini will eat some of the RAM on the Pixel 9 phones
The AI boom came out of the blue, and Google didn’t really have time to prepare models and hardware to make the Pixel 7 and Pixel 8 proper AI phones. So, the Pixel 9 phones are the first ones built from the ground up for Gemini.
The Pixel 9 is a true-to-form AI phone, but that comes at a cost. We’re not talking about money (well, some of the phones are more expensive this year), we’re talking about RAM. The Pixel 9 comes with 12GB of RAM and the three Pro models come with 16GB of RAM. Those are flagship-grade numbers, and it’s nice to see that, as Google hasn’t been the one to push the envelope in terms of RAM.
However, it appears that a portion of that extra RAM will go right to Gemini. AI is a RAM-intensive technology. Gemini needs room to stretch its legs in order to be the best assistant it can be. For all we know, the lack of proper RAM might have been the reason why Gemini couldn’t be a proper Google Assistant replacement.
We don’t know how much RAM Google will dedicate to Gemini. Also, it’ll be used regardless of whether you choose to revert to Assistant. Hopefully, the company isn’t dedicating too much RAM to Gemini. We have to remember that Gemini is going to gain new features and functions over the years, so there’s a chance that it will become more RAM-hungry as time goes on.
