Definition
From the German for “Mixed Metal,” Mischmetal is an alloy containing rare earth elements in roughly the same ratio they appear in the ground (mostly Cerium and Lanthanum). Because separating rare earths is expensive, using them in this mixed form is cheaper.
Uses
Historically used for cigarette lighter flints (ferrocerium). Today, it is used as an alloying additive in steel and aluminum to remove impurities and improve malleability.
