Solvent Extraction (SX)

Definition

Solvent Extraction (SX) is a method used to separate compounds based on their relative solubilities in two different immiscible liquids (usually water and an organic solvent).

The Industry Standard

It is currently the only commercially viable way to separate rare earths at scale. It requires thousands of mixer-settler tanks and uses significant amounts of acid and organic chemicals. It is the primary reason why processing plants are so large and expensive to build.
